How to: Not Care What Other People Think!
“What other people think about you has nothing to do with you and everything to do with them. Stop seeking outside validation. All that matters is what’s true for you. Everything else is just other people’s perception of reality, and that’s none of your business.” - excerpt from Jen Sincero's ‘You Are a Badass’
This has been one of the hardest lessons for me personally and something I still struggle with on a daily basis. To a certain extent, we can’t help but care and wonder what other people think of us. As humans, we desire community, we long to feel like part of a tribe, that we fit in and have our place among the pack. But when that desire comes at the price of you holding yourself back from the full expression of who you are as a being, in all your creative, beautiful, glorious genius, it becomes a problem.
Social media makes this particularly challenging, as we are literally putting ourselves out there for constant peer review & seeking validation through likes and comments, BUT being aware of it is the first step. When you catch yourself holding back due to this fear, check in with yourself, and ask if you’re being true to you.
Jen Sincero also shared some helpful tips in her book:
How to not care what other people think:
• Ask yourself why - why are you about to do or say something? Is it to be liked? To put someone down? Practice coming from a place of integrity.
• Always do your best.
• Trust your intuition - you have all the answers inside of you!
• Find a temporary role model - what would my hero do?
Is this something you struggle with as well? I’d love to hear how you combat it!
